Historic Houses and Gardens of England
Historic Houses Trust Members Tour led by Dr James Broadbent
19 May – 10 June 2009

Your Tour Leader
Dr James Broadbent is well known as an historian, conservationist and author. His main area of study is the history of colonial houses in New South Wales, their furnishings, gardens and the society that built and lived in them. Former Senior Curatorial Advisor at the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales, his publications, often complementing exhibitions of the same theme and title,
include India, China, Australia, Trade and Society 1788-1850, 2003; The Australian Colonial House, Houses and Society in New South Wales 1788-1842, 1997 and co-authored Francis Greenway, Architect, 1997, The Age of Macquarie, 1992 and Gothic Taste in the Colony of New South Wales, 1980.
James Broadbent lives at The Cottage, Mulgoa (c. 1810), an important early bungalow which he has saved from dereliction. He has advised on the conservation and restoration of many significant Australian houses and gardens, most recently the recreation of the garden at ‘Glenfield’.

Introduction
“What English influences fashioned Australian houses and gardens from the early
nineteenth century to the early twentieth century? The Picturesque and the Gardensque; Gothick and the Gothic Revival; the Aesthetic Movement and the Arts and Crafts Movement; Italianate and Art Nouveau: all these are discovered in this tour of late Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses, gardens and collections.

From Arts and Crafts in Sussex and the Classical Revival in Wessex to the Gothic Revival in the West Midlands and the Picturesque in the Lake District. Grand houses, like Madresfield, the home of New South Wales’s Governor, Lord Beauchamp are matched by smaller manor houses such as Lytes Cary, an ancient house restored in the early twentieth century on Ruskinian principles. Landscaped parks like Chatsworth, by intimate gardens like Iford Manor; sophisticated collections like the Regency furnishings of Broughton Hall by the associational collections of Jane Austen’s house or the Bronte parsonage at Haworth.

I invite you to join me in exploring the diversity and richness of ninteenth century design while enjoying the landscapes of the South West, West and North West of England in early summer.”
- Dr James Broadbent
